Field Highlights

Sustained field efforts by NCAOR were initiated since 2005. The team members were part of various Indian Antarctic and Arctic expeditions as well as the first Indian Expedition to the South Pole. Some of the field highlights are:

During the 2005-06 field season of Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica, ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was conducted near the Humboldt ranges in coastal Dronning Maud Land (DML) region and a 65 m long core was retrieved from ~1200 m altitude.

During the 2006-07 field season of InSEA, GPR studies were conducted and two ice cores of length 75 and 55 m respectively were retrieved from the Nivlisen ice shelf from the DML region. Additionally, several snow samples were collected along a coast to inland transect in the Ingrid Christensen Coast.

During the 2008-09 field season, 43 snow cores (~1 m each) were collected along two coast to inland transects from Ingrid Christensen Coast and central Dronning Maud Land in the eastern Antarctica.

During the 2009-10 field season, GPR survey was conducted at the high accumulation areas near the Wohlthat mountains chain to identify future ice core drilling sites.

Additionally, several snow cores were collected for glaciochemical characterization.

During the first Indian Scientific Expedition to South Pole during 2010-11 season, several snow cores were collected along the Maitri to South Pole transect.

During 2011 winter field season in Arctic, several, snow and sea ice cores were collected from the Ny-Ålesund region of Svalbard.
