The World Environment Day 2026 celebrations commenced at the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, with the gracious presence of the Chief Guest, Dr. M. K. Janarthanam, Chairman, Goa State Research Foundation (GSRF).


The gathering was welcomed by Dr. Rahul Mohan, Scientist-G and Group Director, NCPOR, who highlighted the significance of the day in promoting environmental awareness. In his address, Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director, NCPOR, highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and emphasized the critical role of the polar regions in understanding Earth's changing climate and its implications for India. He stated that "Investing in polar research is investing in our future,” for informed environmental decision-making and climate resilience.

 

As part of the World Environment Day 2026 celebrations at NCPOR, Dr. M. K. Janarthanam, Chairman, Goa State Research Foundation (GSRF), delivered an insightful talk on sustainability and the role of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in building a better future. During his address, he highlighted the importance of protecting life on Earth and drew attention to the alarming rate at which many plant and animal species are disappearing. His talk underscored the need for greater awareness, conservation efforts, and collective responsibility towards safeguarding nature and promoting sustainable development.
