Ny-Ålesund is a functional base for international research and environmental monitoring settlements situated at78˚55’ N, 11˚56’ Eon the west coast of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago (Figure 1). Till now, eleven different institutions from ten different countries have permanent research stations in Ny-Ålesund, three of them are staffed year – around. A former coal mining colony, Ny-Ålesund is a quiet research outpost of 30 to 40 people about 2,100 km north of Oslo, growing to over 180 from June, when scientists from around 20 nations will arrive for its short summer. It is owned and run by the Norwegian state firm Kings Bay. The distance to the North Pole is 1231 km. The mean temperature in the coldest month (February) is -14°C, while the warmest month (July) has a mean temperature of +5°C.
